Growing Watermelons Cantonese Nursery Rhyme Lyrics 頭頂長出大西瓜粵語兒歌歌詞

Were you ever told as a child to be careful about swallowing watermelon seeds, because they will grow from your head? I certainly was told that and was always very careful in eating seeds!

頭頂長出大西瓜 is a fun song that your kids will either love or hate. My kiddo loves it, my niece not so much, as she feels that the mother in the song is mean.

頭頂長出大西瓜

大西瓜多好哇,個個都想食;
daai6 sai1 gwaa1 do1 hou2 waa1 , go3 go3 dou1 soeng2 sik6 ;
大家分切開它,味道頂呱呱。
daai6 gaa1 fan1 cit3 hoi1 taa1 , mei6 dou6 ding2 gwaa 1 gwaa 1 。
唔小心吞左啦,
m4 siu2 sam1 tan1 zo2 laa1 ,
圓圓幾粒核唉呀呀;
jyun4 jyun4 gei2 lap1 wat6 aai1 aa1 aa1 ;

問媽媽點算啦,頭頂長出瓜!
man6 maa1 maa1 dim2 syun3 laa1, tau4 deng2 zoeng2 ceot1 gwaa1 !
媽媽笑住話,長左多瓜食;
maa1 maa1 siu3 zyu6 waa6 , zoeng2 zo2 do1 gwaa1 sik6 ;
由春天到冬天,時時有西瓜。
jau4 ceon1 tin1 dou3 dung1 tin1,si4 si4 jau5 sai1 gwaa1

Translation:

Big Watermelon – How good it is! Everyone wants to eat it.
Everyone will share. Cut it open. The taste is fabulous!
Not careful! Swallowed….A few round seeds – Ai ya!
I asked mummy… what should I do?Melon will grow from the top of my head!
Mummy laughed and said…Lots of melon will grow for us to eat
From spring to winter..There will be melons all the time.

    I have been searching for the lyrics to this song for a few weeks! My son loves this song. My husband says he can’t translate it and I don’t speak Chinese. What’s the translation of the lines? (Google Translate isn’t helpful!) Thank you!

      Hi Lindsey, I hope the lyrics are useful. I am not very good at translation, but here is my attempt:
      Big Watermelon – How good it is! Everyone wants to eat it.

      Not careful! Swallowed….A few round seeds – Ai ya!

      Google translator isn’t very good for Cantonese. I suggest using Bing (must select Cantonese) or http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/scripts/parse_chinese.php

      Are there any songs that you are looking for lyrics of? I’ll see what I can do to at least transcribe some for you if I know the song. 🙂

    Thanks for the printable version. It’s very helpful for learning the song.

    I think the jyutping translation of 長 should actually be “zoeng2” instead of “coeng4”. In the song’s context it’s about ‘growing’ instead of being ‘long’.

    Also 頂 should be “deng2” instead of “ding2” as it is for “top of head”

    at least according to what I found online, and what I hear from the song. I’m not a native speaker/reader, so rely on the jyutping.

    Thanks again!
